Health Canada's Consumer Product Safety Program wants to inform you of the posting of “Lithium-ion batteries and consumer products that contain lithium-ion batteries” to Table 1 of the General Prohibitions under the CCPSA. Posting to Table 1 signals Health Canada’s understanding that these consumer products pose hazards of concern. This is the first step towards determining whether mandatory rules for the manufacture, import, advertising and sale of lithium-ion batteries are required to help protect the health and safety of people in Canada. Health Canada will continue its assessment of the burn, fire and explosion hazards posed by these products, and continue evaluating the most appropriate legislative tools to mitigate risk to the people of Canada. As this work progresses in the coming months, people in Canada will be invited to comment during public consultations on the proposed path forward. 

We recognize that this is an area of joint interest and look forward to continuing to work with your organization on this topic.

Federal, Provincial, and Territorial Ministers recognize the work being done across Canada to prevent, prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies and disasters.

The Emergency Management Exemplary Service Award is a prestigious recognition for exceptional service and achievement. This award, a partnership between federal, provincial, and territorial governments, recognizes recipients who have achieved excellence in their respective fields. Across Canada, there are many deserving individuals and groups working on emergency management, such as community-based volunteers, people working in all levels of government in emergency management organizations, and Indigenous communities.

Awards are granted in five categories:

• resilient communities
• search and rescue volunteers
• search and rescue employees
• youth
• outstanding contribution to emergency management

During the nomination period, federal, provincial, and territorial governments may present awards in each category to deserving individuals or groups of up to 20 individuals.

Nomination processes vary by province and territory and by award category. Provincial and territorial governments are leading the nomination process for the Resilient Communities, Youth, and Outstanding Contribution to Emergency Management categories in their jurisdictions.

With $48 Million to invest over 4 years starting in April 2024, the Build and Mobilize Foundational Wildland Fire Knowledge Program aims to encourage collaborative research and demonstration projects focused on innovation in wildfire risk assessment, risk mitigation, and adaptive forest management as per the Blueprint for Wildland Fire Science in Canada.

This new program will address gaps in foundational knowledge by developing and evaluating wildland fire risk assessment and risk mitigation strategies and technologies that support Indigenous peoples, local and provincial/territorial governments and fire management agencies to reduce wildfire risk in the face of a changing climate.

Within this program, the Supporting and Mobilizing Indigenous Fire Knowledge grant focuses on building and enhancing capacity to support Indigenous communities in identifying and managing their own wildfire risk. It is informed by Indigenous knowledge and land management practices, and provides support for knowledge sharing and the development of tools and resources by and for Indigenous communities.

Program research themes

The program will support initiatives that advance knowledge in the following three themes.

Theme 1: Wildfire risk assessment

Priority research topics:

• Developing methods and baseline data for risk assessments at community and regional scales
• Integrating multiple values including air quality, carbon balance, fibre recovery
• Leveraging new technologies to accelerate risk assessments
• Leveraging new technologies, and integration of research into predictive models and decision-making tools
  

Theme 2: Wildfire risk mitigation
Priority research topics:

• Testing and demonstrating the real-world feasibility, cost and effectiveness of prevention or mitigation strategies or technologies, including new approaches
• Understanding social acceptability of different interventions
• Creating awareness that leads to action by increasing the efficacy of education, outreach, and mobilization strategies
• Estimating the effects of relevant risk-reduction interventions, including return on investment
  

Theme 3: Adaptive forestry practices

Priority research topics:

• Testing and demonstrating enhanced fibre recovery from fuel management activities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and offset the costs of treatment
• Developing approaches to integrate wildfire risk reduction as an outcome in forest management practices
• Identifying, testing, and demonstrating new forest management practices that minimize impacts of future wildland fires

As climate change continues to impact the frequency, intensity and severity of wildfires in many provinces and territories, the Government of Canada is continuing to support Canadians now while strengthening Canada’s preparedness for years to come. Investments that support wildland fire training initiatives increase the capacity for fire management across Canada.

Today, the Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, announced the launch of the Fighting and Managing Wildfire in a Changing Climate Program — Training Fund (FMWCC) call for applications. Under this program, the Government of Canada will provide funding to train 1,000 firefighters to help reduce the risks of wildfires and support community-based capacity to mitigate, prepare and respond to wildfires on an ongoing basis.

A two-year pilot phase, starting in 2022–23, has informed the design of this 2023 Wildfire Training Fund Call for Applications to support projects through the end of the program in 2027. 

Funding is available for projects in the following three streams: 

The Call prioritizes Indigenous applicants and projects that demonstrate the benefit to Indigenous communities, which face disproportionate climate impacts relating to wildfires. It will also take into consideration the three streams, a distinction-based approach, national distribution and support diversity and the inclusion of underrepresented groups (e.g., women, racialized groups and Indigenous groups).  

Applications for the 2023 Wildfire Training Fund Call for Applications will be accepted from December 8, 2023, until February 1, 2024, and are open to for-profit and not-for-profit organizations, Indigenous organizations, groups and communities, Canadian academic institutions, provincial, territorial, regional and municipal governments and their departments and agencies.

Virtual information sessions will be held on December 14, 2024, at 11 a.m. ET in French and 1 p.m. ET in English. These sessions will provide an opportunity for interested applicants to pose questions about the application requirements and process.

The Canadian Safety and Security Program is looking for innovative solutions for the challenge: Lighting the path with AI: Advanced analytics and decision support for first responders.

Innovators will establish research networks made up of multidisciplinary teams focused on artificial intelligence and machine learning and how it can assist first responders in decision making. Up to $2 million in funding is available for each successful proposal.

We are looking for proposals that exploit advances made possible by artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies in the following areas:

• big data and algorithm-based tools for strategic and operational levels of analysis;
• responder analytics for the frontline;
• Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools for detecting tri-service/emergency management trends, activities, and information fusion; and,
• improved situational awareness science and technology supports that go beyond current industry offerings.

Pétition à l'appui du projet de loi C-310: Loi modifiant la Loi de l'impôt sur le revenu

Canada has 90,000 volunteer firefighters who provide fire and all hazard emergency services to their communities. Many of these individuals receive some form of pay on call, an honorarium, or are given some funding to cover expenses, but they do not draw a living wage from firefighting. About 30% of them pay out of pocket to cover expenses associated with the service they provide to their community. An additional 3,000 search and rescue volunteers also offer critical services.

Without volunteer firefighters and search and rescue volunteers, thousands of communities in Canada would have no fire and emergency response coverage. The tax base just can’t handle the cost of a career department.

In 2013, the federal government initiated a tax credit recognizing these individuals, but that tax credit has not kept up with cost of living. MP Gord Johns has been calling on the federal government to increase this tax credit from $3,000 to $10,000.

In support of this Bill, we are circulating two petitions (an electronic and paper version – both of which can be signed by the same individuals), calling upon the Government of Canada to support Bill C-310 and enact amendments to subsections 118.06(2) and 118.07(2) of the Income Tax Act in order to increase the amount of the tax credits for volunteer firefighting and search and rescue volunteer services from $3,000 to $10,000.

En 2013, le gouvernement fédéral a mis en place un crédit d'impôt pour ces personnes, mais ce crédit d'impôt n'a pas suivi l'évolution du coût de la vie. Le député Gord Johns fait appel au gouvernement fédéral pour revaloriser de 3 000 à 10 000 dollars ce crédit d’impôt.

Pour appuyer ce projet de loi, nous faisons circuler deux pétitions (une version électronique et une version papier - les deux pouvant être signées par les mêmes personnes), demandant au gouvernement du Canada d'appuyer le projet de loi C-310 et d'adopter des modifications aux paragraphes 118.06(2) et 118.07(2) de la Loi de l'impôt sur le revenu afin de bonifier de 3 000 $ à 10 000 $ le montant du crédit d'impôt pour les services volontaires de lutte contre les incendies et les services volontaires de recherche et de sauvetage.

Cancer in female firefighters: The clinicobiological, psychological, and social perspectives

Objectives: This study explored how demographic characteristics, life experiences, and firefighting exposures have an impact on cancer among female firefighters, and described the types and biologic characteristics of cancers as reported by women in the fire service.

Methods: The online survey was available from June 2019 to July 2020. Questions related to demographic characteristics, lifestyle factors, firefighting exposures, and cancer diagnoses. Descriptive analyses characterized variables by the presence or absence of cancer. Qualitative data provided insight into both firefighting and cancer experiences among women.Results: There were 1,344 female firefighter respondents from 12 different countries, 256 of whom provided information on their cancer diagnosis. North American respondents made up 92% of the total. Those with cancer were older, had been in the fire service longer, had more career fires and toxic exposures, and were less likely to still be in active service. They also reported more tobacco use, and more full-term pregnancies. There were no differences in family history of cancer between the two groups. The average age at diagnosis was 39.0 years. The major types of cancer reported included breast (25.4%), cervical (21.1%), melanoma (20.7%), base cell/skin (16.4%), and uterine (14.8%). The cancer was detected when seeking medical attention for symptoms (42.1%), during routine health screening (29.8%), and during specific cancer screening (28.1%). The stage of cancer was reported by 44.5%, and 30.9% included the histopathological grade. Treatments included surgery (72.7%), chemotherapy (14.8%), radiotherapy (13.7%), and observation (13.7%). Challenges associated with cancer included psychosocial (33.2%), financial (18.8%), physical (6.6%), and spiritual (6.3%). Concerns about reporting a cancer experience to their employer included the desire to keep health information private (11.3%), a feeling of vulnerability (7.4%), and being perceived as weak (7.0%). Lack of support from their employer or insurer was also noted.

Conclusion: Female firefighters experienced a wide variety of different types of cancers which may come earlier than similar cancers in the public. These findings can help inform resource allocation, the development of new policies, and the need for broader presumptive coverage to support female firefighters diagnosed with cancer.

To this end we are conducting a survey of global end-users of active-wildland fire Earth Observation data and products. The data collected will be used by the CEOS Wildfire Pilot Team in support of publications. Please do not include any personal identifying information in your response, such as people's names. This plan will guide us as we continue addressing barriers in the priority areas under the Accessible Canada Act. This first iteration of our plan is one of the many ways we implement our vision, mission, and values.

We are confident that the actions we have laid out in the plan will help us achieve our desired objectives by 2025.

Tabling of our 2023 to 2024 Departmental Plan

As we continue to move forward, we are eager to share with you our 2023 to 2024 Departmental Plan. It lists all our priorities for the upcoming year.

This past year was one of great progress on the delivery of our mandate and priorities. We firmly established our organization within the accessibility space.

We launched our first public review of a model standard for the Built Environment – Accessibility. We signed 5 memoranda of understanding with 3 provinces. And finally, we hosted a successful Pan-Canadian Forum.

The work we have planned for this year, through our 2023 to 2024 Departmental Plan, is ambitious. Still, we are confident and eager to continue working with Canadians toward a more inclusive and barrier-free Canada. We hope that you join us on our journey!

Collaboration with CSA Group: 3 new standards

On February 16, Accessibility Standards Canada and CSA Group announced the publication of three new co-branded accessibility standards . The collaboration brings improvements and updates to older standards on accessibility.

• CSA/ASC B651, Accessible design for the built environment . It is a new edition of a previous standard. 

• CSA/ASC B651.2, Accessible design for self-service interactive devices including automated banking machines . The standard is a revision and combination of two previously existing standards: CAN/CSA-B651.1:09 (R2020) and CAN/CSA-B651.2-07 (R2017).

• CSA/ASC B652, Accessible dwellings . This new standard contains recommendations for accessible home design, helping to set the standard for affordable, adaptable, and accessible homes across Canada.

This collaboration between our organizations helped to ensure there were no redundancies or errors in the standards. It also means that the standards are free of charge for use by all Canadians.

Publication of these standards is another step toward contributing to a more inclusive and barrier-free Canada.

Nous avons lancé notre premier examen public d’une norme modèle pour l’environnement bâti – Accessibilité. Nous avons signé cinq protocoles d’entente avec trois provinces. Enfin, nous avons organisé un forum pancanadien réussi.

Le travail que nous avons prévu pour l’année à venir, dans le cadre de notre plan ministériel de 2023 à 2023, est ambitieux. Cependant, nous avons confiance et sommes impatients de continuer à travailler avec les Canadiens et à contribuer à un Canada plus inclusif et exempt d’obstacle.

Collaboration avec le Groupe CSA : 3 nouvelles normes

Le 16 février, Normes d’accessibilité Canada et le Groupe CSA ont annoncé la co-publication de trois nouvelles normes d’accessibilité. Cette collaboration apporte des améliorations aux anciennes normes sur l’accessibilité tout en les mettant à jour.

• Norme CSA/ASC B651, Conception accessible pour l’environnement bâti . Il s’agit de la nouvelle édition d’une ancienne norme.

• Norme CSA/ASC B651.2, Conception accessible des dispositifs interactifs libre-service, y compris les guichets automatiques bancaires . Cette norme est une révision et une combinaison de deux normes existantes : CAN/CSA-B651.1:09 (R2020) et CAN/CSA-B651.2-07 (R2017).

• Norme CSA/ASC B652, Logements accessibles . Cette nouvelle norme contient des recommandations pour la conception de logements accessibles. Elle contribue à établir la norme pour des logements abordables, adaptables et accessibles au Canada.

La collaboration entre nos deux organisations a aussi permis d’assurer qu’il n’y ait pas de redondance ou d’erreur dans les normes. Elle a aussi fait en sorte que ces normes sont offertes gratuitement à tous les Canadiens.

La publication de ces normes est une autre étape vers un Canada plus inclusif et exempt d’obstacle.

The Government of Canada Adaptation Action Plan outlines how the federal government is contributing to implementing the National Adaptation Strategy. It provides a framework to organize federal adaptation actions going forward. The Government of Canada is making targeted choices to help meet the Strategy’s goals and objectives, while respecting the federal government’s role and authority for action.  

The federal action plan organizes targeted measures in the five areas that are laid out in the Strategy:

• Disaster Resilience
  
• Health and Wellbeing
  
• Nature and Biodiversity
  
• Infrastructure
  
• Economy and Workers

The federal action plan will complement the adaptation work and strategies of provinces, territories and Indigenous partners. In addition to the federal plan, separate provincial and territorial action plans will advance efforts on shared priorities, and Indigenous climate leadership will support self-determined action. Taken together, these efforts will make Canada more climate resilient as the country continues to face the impacts of climate change, now and in the future.

Notre voie vers des collectivités adaptées au climat : Le plan d’action sur l’adaptation du gouvernement du Canada

Le plan d’action sur l’adaptation du gouvernement du Canada décrit comment le gouvernement fédéral contribue à la mise en œuvre de la Stratégie nationale d'adaptation. Il fournit un cadre sur l’organisation des mesures fédérales en matière d’adaptation pour l’avenir. Le gouvernement du Canada fait des choix ciblés pour contribuer à l’atteinte des buts et des objectifs de la Stratégie, tout en respectant le rôle et le pouvoir d’agir du gouvernement fédéral.

Le plan d’action fédéral prévoit des mesures ciblées dans les cinq domaines suivants énoncés dans la Stratégie :

Lancement de l’examen législatif de la Loi sur le cannabis

Earlier today, the Minister of Health and the Minister of Mental Health and Addictions announced the launch of the legislative review of the Cannabis Act.

The objective of the Cannabis Act is to protect the health and safety of Canadians while serving as a flexible legislative framework that adapts and responds to the ongoing and emerging needs of Canadians. Section 151.1 of the Cannabis Act requires the Minister of Health to conduct a review of the Act three years after coming into force. The review will last 18 months and will conclude with a report tabled in both Houses of Parliament.

In order to ensure a credible, inclusive, and evidence-driven process for the legislative review, the Ministers have announced that an independent Expert Panel, chaired by Mr. Morris Rosenberg, will lead the review. The final composition of the Panel will be announced in the coming weeks, following the completion of the appointment process and conflict of interest vetting.

The Panel will provide independent, expert advice to both Ministers on progress made towards achieving the Act’s objectives, and their findings will help to identify priority areas to improve the functioning of the Act. It will use a range of tools to engage the public and stakeholders to inform their independent assessment of the Cannabis Act, including an online engagement process, in-person engagement sessions, and ongoing dialogue with key stakeholders and experts in relevant fields.

As an initial step in the process, a 60-day online engagement process was launched today, supported by the engagement paper, Taking Stock of Progress: Cannabis Legalization and Regulation in Canada , which outlines the key features of the legislative framework, as well as national trends and evidence. You are invited to participate in this engagement exercise by completing an online questionnaire, which reflects the topics and questions outlined in the paper.

In addition, First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples are invited to read and provide feedback on the Summary from Engagement with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples: The Cannabis Act and Its Impacts,, which outlines what has been heard by Health Canada through engagement to date between First Nations, Inuit and Métis and the department on the Cannabis Act. Feedback on this paper will help confirm if Health Canada has properly understood Indigenous perspectives, priorities and concerns related to cannabis and will inform how the Expert Panel should engage with First Nations, Inuit and Métis partners during the 18-month review period.

The online engagement period will run from September 22 to November 21, 2022. Please note that all comments must be received by 11:59 pm EST, November 21, 2022, when the engagement period ends. Submissions will be summarized in separate “What We Heard” reports; however, comments will not be attributed to any specific individual or organization. These reports will be made public on Canada.ca.

Information about the engagement process can be found on the Cannabis Act legislative review webpage. The Legislative Review Secretariat will be hosting a WebEx information session regarding technical aspects of the process and providing support in submitting online feedback. A follow-up email invitation will be sent to recipients of this email with further information on the WebEx on a later date. Plus tôt aujourd’hui, le ministre de la Santé et la ministre de la Santé mentale et des Dépendances ont lancé un examen législatif de la Loi sur le Cannabis.

L’objectif de la Loi sur le cannabis est de protéger la santé et la sécurité des Canadiens et Canadiennes, tout en servant de cadre législatif souple qui s’adapte à leurs besoins actuels et émergents et y répond. L’article 151.1 de la Loi sur le cannabis oblige le ministre de la Santé à procéder à un examen de la Loi trois ans après son entrée en vigueur. L’examen durera 18 mois et se conclura par un rapport déposé devant les deux chambres du Parlement.

Afin d’assurer un processus crédible, inclusif et fondé sur des données probantes pour l’examen législatif, les ministres ont annoncé qu’un comité d’experts indépendant, présidé par M. Morris Rosenberg, dirigera l’examen. La composition finale du comité sera annoncée dans les semaines à venir, après l'achèvement de la procédure de nomination et de la vérification des conflits d'intérêts.

In recognition that June is National Seniors Month in Canada, we are pleased to share these resources and request your assistance in sharing them as broadly as possible to people who will benefit from the information.

The 2020 NIA/Red Cross report clearly demonstrated the need to better support emergency preparedness for older Canadians, especially in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Recent disasters and emergencies such as the deadly storms in Ontario and Quebec that resulted in lengthy power outages, the prolonged heatwaves last year in British Columbia, and the annual seasonal risk of floods and fires are good reminders that emergency preparedness is vital to the health and safety of our communities.

The report also revealed a diverse continuum of capacity amongst older adults, from reduced capacity due to physical and cognitive impairments, to high capacity for active engagement in the community. Older adults themselves should be empowered to reach out and connect with their peers, particularly those who are more vulnerable, supporting each other in anticipating and preparing for disasters. The critical role of caregivers, whether they be partners, family members or friends, must also be recognized and supported.

Our collective goal is to share the Older Adults Emergency Preparedness Guide as broadly as we can. Together we can help prepare older adults for emergencies so they can stay as safe as possible.

It has been no secret that the country’s fire chiefs have been in support of sprinklers in new

residential construction for many years. Jurisdictions where this is the norm, have limited deaths in these homes.

As such, in our view, there is no question that the presence of residential sprinklers saves lives and

that if it were free, it would be done already. There is also no question that there is a cost and a risk

calculation on the affordability and desirability of sprinklers for home buyers, builders, industry,

planners and others. For many years, we’ve sat at tables where Fire Chiefs call for sprinklers and others

respond the likelihood of need doesn’t warrant the cost.

Our goal in this paper, is to change the conversation entirely. The report rests on the assumption that if

costs, myths and misunderstandings can be resolved, we can come closer to a society in which all new

residential construction is sprinklered and eliminate fire related deaths in them.

Many people contributed to this report. We had tremendous responses to the surveys and requests

for interviews from within CAFC and from industry and other stakeholders. The CAFC Building Codes

Committee led the project. Co-Chairs Ret. Deputy Chief Sean Tracey and Rt. Lt. Col Ga tan Morinville

penned the report with our Executive Director Tina Saryeddine. CAFC’s National Advisory Council

members ensured their provincial, territorial and national affiliate perspectives were represented.

CASA generously funded the work; Denise Ferraccioli of Clever Girl Creative did formatting, and

Salvatore Strippoli did the translation.

We’ll be interested in your reactions to this report. We hope it will start the conversation and that

external partners will follow up with us to discuss some of the incentives further. You can do so by

Une approche gagnante en faveur de l’installation de gicleurs résidentiels au Canada

Ce n’est un secret pour personne que les chefs des pompiers du pays soutiennent depuis de nombreuses années l’installation de gicleurs résidentiels dans les nouvelles constructions. Les territoires de compétence où cela est la norme ont limité les décès dans ces bâtiments.

Ainsi, à notre avis, il ne fait aucun doute que la présence de gicleurs résidentiels sauve des vies et que si c’était gratuit, ce serait déjà fait. Il ne fait également aucun doute qu’il y a un coût et un calcul de risque sur l’abordabilité et le caractère souhaitable des gicleurs pour les acheteurs de maisons, les constructeurs, l’industrie, les planificateurs et autres intervenants. Depuis de nombreuses années, nous sommes assis à des tables où les chefs de pompiers réclament des gicleurs et où d’autres répondent que la probabilité d’un besoin ne justifie pas le coût.

Cela peut être vrai ou non, mais notre objectif dans le présent rapport est de modifier la perspective du tout au tout. Le rapport repose sur l’hypothèse que si les coûts, les préjugés et les malentendus pouvaient être résolus, nous nous nous rapprocherions d’une société dans laquelle toutes les nouvelles constructions résidentielles seraient munies de gicleurs en éliminant les décès liés aux incendies dans les nouvelles constructions résidentielles.

De nombreuses personnes ont contribué à ce rapport. Nous avons reçu d’excellentes réponses aux sondages et aux demandes d’entrevues à l’interne de l’ACCP, du secteur de la lutte contre les incendies et d’autres parties prenantes. Le Comité des codes du bâtiment de l’ACCP a dirigé le projet et les coprésidents Sean Tracey, adjoint chef retr. et le RT. Lt. Col Gaétan Morinville, ont rédigé le rapport avec notre directrice générale Tina Saryeddine, PhD. Les membres du Conseil consultatif national de l’ACCP ont veillé à ce que les points de vue de leurs affiliés provinciaux, territoriaux et nationaux soient représentés. La CASA a généreusement financé le travail ; Denise Ferraccioli, de Clever Girl Creative, s’est chargée du formatage et Salvatore Strippoli de la traduction.

At the CAFC, a new Cancer Committee was started in 2022 to help further address this issue for all firefighters and department types. It is very interested in Bill C-224 proposed by MP Sherry Romanado, An Act To Establish A National Framework for the Prevention and Treatment of Cancers Linked to Firefighting. CAFC will do its part to help advance this bill.

Le cancer est un problème qui affecte les pompiers de n’importe quelle catégorie dans toutes les régions du pays. Bien que des ressources importantes soient mobilisées, elles n'atteignent pas toujours toutes les composantes de notre secteur.

À l'ACCP, un nouveau comité sur le cancer a été mis sur pied en 2022 pour aider à mieux aborder cette question pour tous les pompiers et tous les types de service. Il est très intéressé par le projet de loi C-224 proposé par la députée Sherry Romanado, Loi établissant un cadre national pour la prévention et le traitement des cancers liés à la lutte contre les incendies. L'ACCP fera sa part pour aider à faire avancer ce projet de loi.

Public review of proposed changes to the 2015 editions of the National Building, Fire, and Plumbing Codes and the National Energy Code for Buildings to be held from October 22 to December 23, 2019

The Canadian Commission on Building and Fire Codes (CCBFC) invites your organization and its members to take part in the  fall 2019 public review  from  October 22  to December 23, 2019.

The purpose of the public review is to provide users of the model codes and stakeholders with a detailed look at the changes being considered and to seek comments as to whether proposed changes should proceed as proposed, or be edited, revised or withdrawn. The responsible standing committee will consider each comment in its recommendations on the proposed changes. The final changes are subject to approval by the CCBFC and will be published by the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) in the 2020 editions of the Codes Canada publications.

This fourth public review of the 2015 code cycle focuses on changes being proposed to the 2015 editions of theNational Building Code (NBC), the National Fire Code (NFC) and the National Plumbing Codes (NPC).

A final national public review will take place in January 2020 which will include changes being proposed to the National Energy Code for Buildings, as well as changes related to accessibility, large farm buildings and updates to referenced standards.

Tenue de l’examen public des modifications proposées aux éditions de 2015 du Code national du bâtiment, du Code national de prévention des incendies, du Code national de la plomberie et du Code national de l’énergie pour les bâtiments du 22 octobre au 23 décembre 2019

La Commission canadienne des codes du bâtiment et de prévention des incendies (CCCBPI) invite votre organisme et ses membres à participer à  l’examen public de l’automne 2019 qui se déroulera du 22 octobre au 23 décembre 2019.

Les examens publics ont pour but de donner aux utilisateurs des codes modèles et aux autres parties intéressées l’occasion d’étudier à fond les modifications proposées et de fournir des commentaires, à savoir si les modifications proposées devraient être approuvées telles quelles, ou être adaptées, révisées ou refusées. Les différents comités permanents tiendront compte de chaque commentaire reçu et formuleront des recommandations sur les modifications proposées. Les modifications finales sont soumises à l’approbation de la CCCBPI et seront publiées par le Conseil national de recherches du Canada (CNRC) dans les éditions de 2020 des publications de Codes Canada.

Ce quatrième examen public du cycle d’élaboration des codes de 2015 porte sur les modifications proposées aux éditions de 2015 du  Code national du bâtiment (CNB), du  Code national de prévention des incendies (CNPI) et du  Code national de la plomberie (CNP).

Un dernier examen public se déroulera en janvier 2020 et portera sur les modifications proposées au  Code national de l’énergie pour les bâtiments, sur les changements liés à l’accessibilité et aux grands bâtiments agricoles, ainsi que sur les mises à jour des normes incorporées par renvoi.

Energy Efficient Buildings Research, Development and Demonstration

A call for Expressions of Interest (EOI) under the Energy-Efficient Buildings RD&D Program is now open for Canadian industry, Indigenous groups, utilities and academia.

Our government is investing $182 million to increase energy efficiency and address climate change by improving how our homes and buildings are designed, renovated, and constructed. $48.4 million is going to support the development and implementation of building codes for existing buildings and new net-zero energy-ready buildings through RD&D initiatives that:

• Accelerate development and adoption of technologies, design and construction
• Provide more cost-effective solutions
• Validate locally with real-world demonstrations
• Build confidence for adoption of updated codes

Recherche, développement et démonstration de bâtiments éconergétiques

Un appel à déclarations d’intérêt, lancé dans le cadre du Programme de recherche, développement et démonstration (RDD) sur les bâtiments écoénergétiques, est maintenant ouvert pour les entreprises, les groupements autochtones, les services publics et le milieu universitaire du Canada.

Notre gouvernement investit 182 millions de dollars pour renforcer l’efficacité énergétique et lutter contre les changements climatiques en améliorant les pratiques de conception, de rénovation et de construction des maisons et immeubles, dont 48,4 millions afin de soutenir le développement et la mise en place de codes du bâtiment pour les bâtiments existants et les nouveaux bâtiments à consommation énergétique nette zéro par des projets qui :

• accélèrent le développement et l’adoption de technologies ainsi que de pratiques de conception et de construction;
• proposent des solutions plus rentables;
• sont étayés localement par des démonstrations en conditions réelles;
• établissent des relations de confiance, qui favorisent l’adoption des codes mis à jour.
