2023 Fire Chief of the Year Winners

For many years, the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs (CAFC) and Fire Underwriters Survey (FUS) have sponsored Canada’s Fire Chief of the Year Awards.

These awards are a wonderful opportunity to recognize excellence in the fire sector. It’s a delight to hear from municipalities and it’s a general celebration for the sector.

The Awards were presented at Fire Rescue Canada 2023. We would like to thank our winners of the 2023 Fire Chief of the Year Awards below.

2023 Fire Chief of the Year Winners

Chief Dean Mineault, Volunteer Fire Chief of the Year 2023

Chief Morgan Hackl has imagined and expanded the roles of Saskatoon Fire in non-traditional public safety initiatives through community collaboration and outreach partnerships. He personally leads and gives back by gaining firsthand knowledge of the challenges to the most vulnerable in the community he serves, including participating this year in the Sanctum Survivor Challenge, where he spent 36 hours living as if homeless on the streets of Saskatoon.

Chief Hackl recognizes that community challenges are a shared responsibility and that Saskatoon Fire is a key leader in solving our community’s most challenging issues. He regularly befriends individuals experiencing homelessness to get to know the person and better understand their needs. His mentoring and support of Saskatoon Fire Executive Officers, by encouraging and embracing creative solutioning and out-of-the box thinking, offers Saskatoon Fire to continually find new ways to support and provide leadership in community safety.

Dean is a demonstrated fire service leader who consistently prioritizes the community first. He focuses on servant leadership and has a large following within his organization. His dedication to every aspect of volunteerism in the community over the last few decades is a testament to his desire to help others, improving safety through public education, fire prevention, and community activities.

While serving on the fire department, he also filled multiple community capacities, including being the Slo-Pitch League President, Beausejour Brokenhead Fire Department Association President, and a local store manager. Dean's selfless dedication to his community safety is worthy of this award.
