2022.4. Uniform Ban on Flying Lantern Use

(Adopted at the 2022 AGM)

Preamble

2022.4.1 Flying lanterns (also known as Sky Lanterns) are fire hazards that have led to accidents and injuries.

2022.4.2 Climate change issues from heat domes to wildfire increase the likelihood of any source of ignition leading to serious grassfire risk and resource utilization.

2022.4.3 The use of flying lanterns is under municipal jurisdictions but that variation in the bylaws across jurisdictions can unintentionally undermine the intentions of each municipality and/or county.

Recommendation

2022.4.4 That CAFC members espouse as a common advice to their municipalities or regions, a complete ban on the sale and use of flying lanterns in Canada, ask the members of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities to consider the same, and alert Health Canada’s Consumer protection branch to the issue.
