If yes, you’ve come to the right place.

On the heels of “Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month” this past January, the CAFC is inviting Fire Departments to partake in a nationwide project on firefighter Cancer prevention information.

With thanks to a partnership with researchers, funding from the Canadian Cancer Society and the Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR), the CAFC is launching a program that will focus on firefighter cancer knowledge, behaviours, attitudes and barriers. By partaking in this research, firefighters will explore of 20 cancer prevention practices.

We have a stream for volunteer departments, and a stream for career and composite departments. There are short videos to help you get started.

Volunteer Departments

Volunteer departments will need to register to engage their members into the program. We describe the program below and also provide an instructional video below.

Departments that partake will be asked to reflect on a set of cancer prevention behaviours in two different and randomly assigned formats (see below):

  1. A 90second firefighter cancer email letter which will be delivered to your departments' firefighters twice a week, on different but related decontamination practices. They include calls to action, a personal story, a self-assessment, a webinar and a chat room.

  2. The second format is a questionnaire with practices that will ask firefighters to rate agreement, behaviour, intention and barriers for each. They will receive the 90 second cancer letters and items above at a later date. View here a sample of the questionnaire.

If you want more details, you can view the video below:

Once you have enrolled in the program, the video below is for your firefighters. It will be included in the email that can be forwarded to your members.
