DRAFT Guidelines for Comment
Addressing Bullying in the Fire Service
The Canadian Association of Fire
Chiefs (CAFC) Mental Health and Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
Committees have prepared three guidelines related to Bullying in the
Fire Service intended for (a) departments, (b) firefighters, and (c)
incoming firefighters.
The initiative was developed considering
international findings that bullying is occurring in fire departments
despite the kind and pro-social nature of the profession.
To
better understand how each of these three guidelines would be received
and whether the statements can be applied in a department, we would like
your feedback.
Once we receive your feedback, we will consider it in the next draft of statements which will then be disseminated for pilot testing in fire departments.
The surveys for each guideline will take you
approximately 7 minutes. As members, you are invited
to provide feedback on each one of these guidelines. Each contains a
series of statements, followed by a question on the extent to which you
would agree, and space to submit any additional feedback.
You may wish to do the surveys for the three guidelines separately because the audiences are different.
- The
first guideline relates to what fire departments need to know about
bullying. It contains 8 statements.View the draft statements here.
- The
second guideline relates to what incoming firefighters need to know
about bullying in fire departments. It contains 12 statements. View the draft statements here.
- The
third guideline relates to the hallmarks of an inclusive, respectful,
and professional fire department. It is intended for any member of the
fire sector. It contains 7 statements. View the draft statements here.
Please submit your responses to the three surveys by March 31, 2025.
Thank you for helping to make the fire service safe for all. We look forward to reading your responses.
UPDATE MARCH 31: Thank you to those who submitted their responses. The committee will be reviewing them and preparing them to be pilot tested.
