Fire Prevention Week 2025
This year CAFC will be supporting our friends at the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the National Fire Indigenous Safety Council (NIFSC) as they Charge into Fire SafetyTM with their messaging around Lithium Ion Batteries. This supports the federal government’s efforts to disseminate new consumer safety guidelines around lithium ion batteries.
Lithium-ion batteries are all around us, and can be dangerous when not handled properly. Over the last three years, the Great Canadian Fire Census has shown that over 600 communities have had to respond to lithium-ion fires, increasing the load on fire departments to put out fires that are more difficult and dangerous to extinguish.
This year's campaign stresses the importance to buy, charge, and recycle safely when it comes to lithium-ion batteries, focussing on three steps to safety:
- Buy only listed products: When buying a product that uses lithium-ion batteries (such as cellphones, e-mobility devices, and more), look for a safety certification march such as UL, ETL, or CSA, as it means that it meets important safety standards.
- Charge devices safely: Always use the cords that came with the product to charge. Follow the instructions from the manufacturer. Buy new chargers from the manufacturer or ones that the manufacturer has approved. Charge your device on a hard surface, and don't overcharge it. Unplug it or remove the battery when it's fully charged.
- Recycle batteries responsibly: Don't throw lithium-ion batteries in the trash or regular recycling bins because they could start a fire. Recycle your device or battery at a safe recycling location in your region.
You can find assets from the NFPA here to use in your messaging.
New assets from NIFSC, involving Sparky’s Indigenous friend Torch the Turtle, will also be available soon.
