Fire Chief of the Year 2020

2020 Fire Chiefs of the Year Award Nominees and Awardees

The Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs (CAFC) and the Fire Underwriters Survey of Canada were proud to announce the Fire Chief of the Year Awards during Virtually Fire Rescue Canada’s 2020 Celebration of Excellence which occurred virtually Monday evening. The awards went to:

Fire Chief Ken McMullen Red Deer Fire and Emergency Services (Career Department) and Fire Chief Randy Schroeder, Town of Mayerthorpe Fire Department (Volunteer Department).

“Each year we present two awards", says Michael Currie, Vice President of Fire Underwriters Survey, “one for a volunteer department chief and the other for a career department”.  Reading the over 40 nominations is tremendous pleasure. The award recipients, the nominees and their communities should be proud”.

Chief John McKearney, President of the CAFC noted, “In truth, every fire chief is its community’s fire chief of the year. However, for these awards we look for indications of what is above and beyond the excellence expected in the role of a fire chief. This year’s recipients demonstrate tremendous leadership not only regionally but provincially and nationally. They also engage in excellence across various aspects of the fire service from training and education to mental health”.

The nominations for fire chief of the year awards are submitted in standard format, then reviewed and scored independently with the highest scoring nominees becoming the award recipients.   This year’s celebration of excellence also recognized all nominees.
