2016.4 CAFC endorse and support where possible the endeavours of the Partners in Protection Association and the adoption and use of the seven FireSmart disciplines in the creation of a national FireSmart program across Canada

Preamble
2016.4.1 Forest fires create billions of dollars in damage each year and more than $4 Billion in 2016 alone
2016.4.2 There is a program in Canada that is intended to reduce and mitigate the dangers and losses of Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) fires
2016.4.3 A non-‐profit organization named Partners in Protection Association exists to lead the development of FireSmart® resources and programs designed to empower the public and increase community resilience to wildfire across Canada.
2016.4.4 Guidance based on the seven FireSmart disciplines of Vegetation Management, Development, Public Education, Legislation, Interagency Cooperation, Cross Training and Emergency Planning assists communities to identify their greatest risks, the benefits of mitigation actions, and helps communities find solutions and take action to improve their fire resilience and emergency preparedness with regard to WUI fires.
Recommendation
2016.4.5 That the Executive Board and membership of the CAFC endorse and support to the extent possible Partners in Protection and the implementation of the FireSmart® program across Canada and especially in areas prone to WUI fires.
2016.4.6 That this initiative be undertaken and announced at the next Wildfire Canada Conference scheduled to be held in October 2016.
