Federal Budget 2025 - 2026
Making Canada Stronger, Safer, and Ready to Lead in Fire and Life Safety:
Clarity, Consensus and Operational Insight from Canada’s Fire Chiefs
This prebudget submission reflects clarity, consensus and operational insight from the country’s
fire chiefs. It once again asks the federal government for National Fire Administration (NFA) at a
cost of 2.4M per year, either as a 2–3-year pilot if necessary, or ongoing. The purpose of an
NFA is to ensure that the federal government can integrate fire and life safety considerations
into federal policy development, improve prevention and strengthen federal response to
emergency when needed, in a jurisdictionally appropriate and cost-effective way. Given debates about what is needed, the brief is organized as a question-and-answer document.
Recommendation
That the Federal Government:
- $2.4 Million per year to pilot and/or establish a National Fire Administration, ensuring that fire and life safety considerations are integrated into federal policy, improving prevention, and strengthening the federal response to emergencies, when needed, in a jurisdictionally appropriate, and cost-effective way. This ask mirrors Motion M-12 introduced in the House of Commons on June 18, 2025.
Please read our submission here. It has been submitted to the Standing Committee on Finance.
We welcome and encourage members to share the brief with your federal MP, staff and partners. It is available in both official languages.
