Annual General Meeting 2017

On behalf of CAFC President Chief Ken Block; Chair of the Resolutions Committee, Chief Denis Pilon; and Chair of the Nominations Committee, Chief Stephen Gamble, we would like to provide you with a preliminary debrief from Fire Rescue Canada and the annual general meeting 2017. The minutes of the AGM will be available shortly. Our End of Conference report here

First, it is a pleasure to announce the 2017-2018 Board of Directors for the CAFC!

  • CAFC President, Chief Ken Block, (Edmonton Alberta)
  • Chief Kerri Martens (Lake Louise, Alberta)
  • Chief Ken McMullen (Calgary, Alberta),
  • Chief Vince McKenzie (Grand Falls Windsor, Newfoundland)
  • Chief Daniel Perron (Ste-Julie, Quebec),
  • Chief Pierre Voisine (Cornwall, Ontario),
  • Chief Dan McCoy (ex Officio as Chair of the National Advisory Council)

Second, it is our pleasure to share with you the results of the call for resolutions:

(1)   All four policy resolutions presented in advance of the AGM, passed with unanimous support. Thank you to Chief John DeHooge (Halton Hills, Ontario), Chief Sean Tracey (Ottawa, Ontario), Chief Richard Amnotte (Levis, Quebec), and Chief Pierre Voisine (Cornwall Ontario).

(2)   We are also very pleased that a fifth resolution proposed by Chief Matt Pegg (Toronto, ON) and Chief Darrell Reid (Vancouver, BC) in light of the tragedy in Mexico during the conference, regarding HUSAR capacity in Canada also passed with unanimous support. You can read the resolutions here

(3)   Two Bylaw resolutions were passed to increase our compliance with the Not for Profit Act. These include providing the Board with flexibility to set the date of membership to match the annual reporting cycle; and striking out the exclusion of nominations from the floor. You can read the resolutions here. You can read the draft revised bylaws here.

Third, a number of association business items were covered while we were gathered in Vancouver:

  1. In advance of Fire Rescue Canada, the CAFC Board and NAC held close to 17 hours of meetings to map out the way forward for 2017-2018. The notes from these meetings are currently being collated. You will hear more about this and have a chance to comment on our plans shortly.
  2. We launched the ECFO program and the National Fire Information database. Thank you to Chief Phil Lemire (White Rock, BC) and Chief Len Garis (Surrey, BC)  and Chief Ken Stuebing (Halifax, Nova Scotia), for their leadership on these projects.
  3. Chief Dan McCoy (Kennebecasis, NB) and Chief Cam Abrey (Dauphin, MB) were each asked to renew their terms as Chair and Vice Chair of the National Advisory Council respectively.
  4. We had a town hall with excellent discussion on committees headed by Chief Linda Masson (Airdrie, Alberta). Stay tuned for updates on committees, government relations week and other items, as well as our newsletter which will come to you every few weeks.

Finally, to all who attended, supported, sent staff, or spoke at Fire Rescue Canada, thank you and a special thank you to CAFC’s Director of Operations and Events, Ms. Vicky Constantineau, Chief Ken McMullen our extraordinary MC, and Chief Rob Evans (Redwood Meadows, AB) for the amazing photography.
