Fire Safety Tips for the Holiday Season from the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs.
The Fire Chiefs Ask you to be fire conscious during the Holidays, and follow the fire safety tips below. Remember, safety begins with you.

Avoid using real candles in your decorating and go flameless this season. If you do use them, keep them at least 12 inches away from anything that can burn.

Give space heaters a minimum of a meter of space from anything that can burn, such as curtains, furniture, and decorations.
|
|
|
|
Water fresh trees daily. Dry trees are more likely to catch on fire. Get rid of the tree after the holidays or once it is dry.
|
|
Use extension cords safely in your decorating. if they are worn, damaged, or broken, replace them. Don't overload your outlets and power bars.
|
|
|
|
Keep lighters and matches out of the reach of children.
|
|
If under the influence of alcohol, avoid cooking or smoking.
|
|
|
|
Doing a lot of Holiday cooking and baking? Make sure to stay in the kitchen and keep an eye on the oven to avoid kitchen fires.

|
Read the manufacturer’s instructions for the number of light strands to connect to avoid electrical fires. Make sure to use the correct lights for interior vs exterior decorating
|
|
|
|
Celebrating Christmas with a tree? Keep it at least 3 feet away from any heat sources, like a fireplace, a radiator, candles, stove, and make sure it doesn’t obstruct any exits in case of emergency.

|
Test your alarms and batteries, replace them if they are 10 years or older. Make sure all your guests know where the exits are in case of emergency.

|
|
|
Ask smokers to smoke outdoors, away from flammable materials, and provide them with a deep ashtray filled with water to put out their cigarette butts.

Before using your fireplace over the holidays, please make sure to service it, clean it, and sweep the chimney. |

|
|
Wrapping presents for your celebration? Recycle your paper instead of burning it in the fireplace. |
|
We encourage you to leave fireworks to licensed professionals. They are prohibited in many municipalities as they are unpredictable and can result in fires and injuries.

| Make sure to properly dispose of your lithium battery powered electronics such as smart phones, laptops, hover boards, electric toothbrushes, and more. |
