The Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs (CAFC) and Humane Canada are pleased to present a draft guideline entitled “Collaborative Practices for Fire Departments and Humane Societies in Emergency Preparedness”.

The purpose of the guideline is to help fire departments and animal rescue organizations initiate conversations about animal rescue in an emergency.

The draft guideline is available on a pilot basis to facilitate the conversation between animal rescue organizations and fire departments. Members may use it recognizing it has not been tested.

Special thanks to the CAFC's AHJ Committee and to Humane Canada for leading this work.

Feedback would be appreciated so it can be improved and released in final form in 2026. We hope it is helpful in your efforts over the current flood and fire season.
